The story is about a mystical charm, a monkey's paw that is brought into the home of the White family by Sergeant Major Morris, who has served in India. Monkey's paw has the ability to grant 3 wishes to 3 people. S.M. Morris was the 2nd owner, the 1st owner's 3rd wish was for death.

A quick background of the author, William Wymark Jacobs (8 September 1863 – 1 September 1943) was an English author of short stories and novels. During his career he was best known for his farcical comedies involving dockside and rural Essex characters.

Jacobs's short story output declined somewhat around the time of the First World War. His literary efforts between then and his death were predominantly adaptations of his own short stories for the stage
